My Riding Ambitions; A Heartfelt Confession (pt 2)

Since the last time I blogged, I have been doing a lot of thinking about where I want to go with my horsey passion and about the things I want to do.

Originally, I was attracted to competing in dressage but as I’ve thought about it over the last couple of weeks, I’ve realised that I might just like to try some show jumping and cross country also- we will see I guess. The thought excites me though so I am taking that as a good sign.

My main issue with this is I don’t have the horse to do it. My welsh section D, Bo, is 19 and it’s just not going to happen with him. I also loan a welsh section D X thoroughbred called Harry but he is more of a short term loan as I will be moving to a different town next year with my partner. While Harry is great and he has so much potential and I’d have been more than happy to take him with me, his owner won’t let me take him as she needs him there for turnout with his little friend which is fair enough- hence the short term loan.

So, you see the problem? I need a horse. My plan now is to continue to enjoy Harry though I’m not sure for how much longer I will loan him, it just depends. At the same time, I plan to save so that maybe by May I will have a bit of cash there to go out and buy my next horse.

The thought of this is super exciting, I actually cannot wait. I do get a little impatient and I wish I could find him now but it would just be great to see one I like, go and view him and then agree to buy him straight off the bat. My goal is May so that gives me some time to get some money away- not a lot, but some. I won’t be getting a fancy dancy steed but I just want something with a good mind and promise.

With all this thinking of a new horse, I’ve been trying to pinpoint what it is I would like. I’m thinking about 15.2hh- 16hh, between 5 years old and 10 years old (yes, this is broad!), a gelding and I’m not fussed on breeds- it depends on the horse itself. Ideally, I wouldn’t want a coloured either so I’d prefer a solid colour, though if he ticked all the boxes and happened to be piebald, obviously, that’s not a deciding factor.

I have already signed up to get notifications of new ads on this great site I have come across called newsnow. I am so up to date that I can practically recite the horses for sale at the moment. Also, have you seen how expensive horses are right now? Who knew a pandemic would cause horses to become so expensive!

Anyhow, I should probably stop looking until I can actually buy one but it’s an addiction now and I don’t feel like denying myself the pleasure at present!

Happy Horsing!
